A Complete Martial Arts System

  • Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

Since arriving to the United States and seeing immense success in early UFC competitions, BJJ has become one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world. Its emphasis on controlling an opponent in the clinch and on the ground while systematically applying pins and submission holds is an approach that has proven effective in a wide range of scenarios.

Today, BJJ is practiced as both a form of combat and self-defense as well as an emerging sport. It is not only trained by police and military all over the world, but by men and women of all ages looking for self-defense, self-improvement, and a growing community to be a part of.

  • Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has become one of the fastest growing spectator sports in the US and the world. MMA has its roots in the ancient Olympic sport of Pankration as well as it's more recent counterpart of “vale tudo” or "anything goes" fighting in Brazil. Modern champions are most commonly proficient in grappling, takedowns, and striking techniques which are taught as a part of a greater whole rather than individual styles.

At Powell's MMA we offer dedicated MMA classes designed to pull these different ranges into a cohesive whole. Whether you are striving to learn self-defense, become a competitive fighter, or simply expand your knowledge, we have qualified coaches to meet your needs. We emphasize the importance of learning principles that can deal with a wide variety of scenarios and rule sets. True to our roots of Jeet Kune Do we are dedicated to constantly evolving and maintaining an open mind capable of learning and adopting new techniques.

  • Kids/ Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

  • No Gi Grappling

Our No Gi submission grappling classes teach ground fighting techniques without the traditional kimono. Our classes include many of the same techniques as traditional BJJ however also include a variety of techniques not allowed under the traditional ruleset.

Unlike many traditional Jiu-jitsu programs, we offer a broader Mixed Martial Art perspective in our grappling classes to include principals for both defending and utilizing strikes from the ground. Our classes also include elements of wrestling, clinching, and takedown techniques which all aid overall grappling skill as well as MMA and self-defense.

  • Muay Thai Boxing

Muay Thai utilizes a combination of punches, elbows, kicks, and knees to attack the opponent. These techniques used in conjunction with standup grappling referred to as clinching or clinch work is commonly referred to as "the art of eight limbs."

Techniques require the use of coordinated full body motions to combine hip rotation into each action including kicks, punches, and blocks. This rotational force generated at the hips and a focus on utilizing the "core muscles" is a distinctive aspect of Muay Thai and sets it apart from other striking martial arts.

Coach Powell has trained extensively in both traditional Muay Thai and is an expert at applying these principles to a broader Mixed Martial Arts platform.

  • Open Gym

We offer a weekly Open Gym, which is a time for students to work independently or in groups with other students. We encourage our students to use this time to solidify concepts taught in our regular classes to assist with each student’s personal progression.
